Rafa is Mateo's mother from the series Elena of Avalor, making her first appearance in the crossover "Elena and the Secret of Avalor".
Elena and the Secret of Avalor[]
Rafa first appears when Princess Sofia arrives at her house with Migs, Luna and Skylar, hoping to find Rafa's father, Alakazar, there. However, when Rafa answers the door, she does tell Sofia that she is at Alakazar's house, but refuses to help her before closing the door on her. However, her son, Mateo, is more willing to help Sofia out, especially once he sees the Amulet of Avalor around her neck and recognizes it.
Sometime later, Mateo, Sofia, and the freed Elena return to Rafa's house to regroup after Elena's attempt to take down Shuriki failed and Shuriki took the Royal Family of Enchancia prisoner in the process. When Rafa peeks outside and sees Elena, she soon announces herself as she reveals she knows the spell to free Isabel, Francisco, and Luisa from the enchanted painting Alakazar placed them inside for their protection. When Mateo questions his mother on it, Rafa reveals that she hears Mateo practicing his magic all the time downstairs, so she decided to study some of her father's old spells just in case they were ever needed, and while she might not practice as much as her son, she still wanted to see Avalor free of Shuriki's tyranny.
Soon, several villagers are heard at the gate, and Rafa has Elena and the others hide while she answers the gate. When the villagers say they heard rumors that Elena was back, Rafa permits them inside before calling Elena out, saying they were among friends. As the villagers offer to help Elena with overthrowing Shuriki, Rafa listens in as Elena, following advice Sofia was given by Zuzo, agrees to their support, knowing that with everyone's help, she can overthrow Shuriki and free Avalor.
Thanks to his mother teaching him the spell, Mateo frees Isabel and her grandparents, and Elena succeeds in retaking Avalor from Shuriki, being reinstated as Crown Princess as heir to the throne after her late parents, King Raul and Queen Lucia.
Elena of Avalor[]
Rafa makes several appearances in the series, such as in "Spellbound" when Mateo is made the new Royal Wizard, following in his grandfather's footsteps, and "Navidad" helping Avalor with preparing for their celebration of their version of Christmas. She later has a major role in "Movin' On Up" with accepting that Mateo is moving out of their family home and into his new personal quarters in the Avalor Palace at Elena's request.
