King Raul and Queen Lucia are the former rulers of the Kingdom of Avalor, parents to Princess Elena and Princess Isabel, and uncle and aunt to Chancellor Esteban.
Elena and the Secret of Avalor[]
Forty-two years before this special, Queen Lucia gave Elena the Amulet of Avalor for her 15th birthday, telling her it would always protect her from harm. A year later, Lucia and King Raul were seen returning to Avalor Palace while being chased by the evil sorceress Shuriki of the Northern Isles in the process, planning to take over Avalor from them by any means necessary, even if it meant killing them at the worst to do so to usurp the throne from them. Elena came out to greet them and welcome them home when their carriage stopped in the castle courtyard, and Shuriki used that moment to her advantage when their guard was lowered, and murdered them with a spell, to Elena's horror as she watched it happen firsthand. At the beginning of the special, Sofia daydreamed about this, and it turned out it was a signal from Elena, who was magically pulled inside the amulet shortly after her parents' murder when Shuriki tried to use the same spell on her as well so as to eliminate the only witness to Raul and Lucia's assassination and secure her undisputed claim to the Avalor throne with the real sovereigns and the rest of their family out of the way and unable to launch an insurrection against her.
With the support of her surviving family, Sofia's family, and the citizens of Avalor, Elena is able to avenge her parents' death by destroying Shuriki's wand, destroying her power, and leaving her a shriveled old woman who is able to escape and swim away. Elena wouldn't fully avenge her parents until much later when she took Shuriki's very life to ensure she would never threaten Avalor or her remaining family ever again, while her parents could finally rest in peace in the afterlife.
Elena of Avalor[]
Raul and Lucia were honored by their parents/parents-in-law Francisco and Luisa, and their daughters, by having a memorial shrine erected in their memory at the cemetery, allowing all of Avalor to pay their respects to their fallen sovereigns. During The Day Of The Dead (Día de los Muertos) celebration, Elena is able to see the spirits of her and Isabel's deceased parents proudly watching over their daughters from the afterlife as they are at Raul and Lucia's memorial with Francisco and Luisa, shortly after Isabel mentioned to Elena that she feels that their parents are still with them somehow, and assuring Elena personally that their parents are still with them, even if not in the Land of the Living.
Later, after being forewarned of an impending test she would have to pass in order to be crowned Queen of Avalor, when Elena is fearful of failing the test and losing her chance to become Queen, her parents appear to her at the following year's Day of the Dead celebration, offering her comfort and advice on doing what she thinks is best for Avalor and never giving up, using their own past experience when they were alive and in power to support their advice to Elena to help rebuild her confidence. Their encouragement allows Elena to succeed at her current task, and she promises to see them again next year after arriving late back at their memorial after the celebration has ended and everyone has gone home for the night.
However, Elena soon flashes back to the moment Shuriki murdered them during her original takeover of Avalor when she discovers Shuriki is still alive during the Sunflower Festival, and bent on conquering Avalor again, this time with her former allies in Fiero and the Delgados, having crafted a new magic wand from the gem in Lucia's tiara that Elena had kept locked up in the Royal Treasury. As a result, Elena makes a solemn vow to defeat Shuriki and avenge her parents' murder once and for all so Shuriki will never threaten Avalor or her surviving family members ever again and her parents can rest easy in the Spirit World afterlife. To that end, she tries to acquire the pieces of the Scepter of Night before Shuriki can, but blinded by her lust for revenge for Raul and Lucia's murders, she allows Shuriki to acquire all three pieces, forcing her to begin training to unlock the full powers of her Scepter of Light so she can avenge Raul and Lucia at long last as she prepares for the final confrontation with Shuriki. The memory of Elena seeing her parents struck down by Shuriki continues to haunt her since seeing Shuriki still alive, causing her to suffer a major case of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) until she can kill Shuriki for good and avenge her parents.
However, during a visit to Nueva Vista, when Elena is nearly killed by Shuriki, but is rescued by Princess Marisa of the Sirenas from drowning, with the help of the Sirenas, Elena is able to defeat and kill Shuriki once and for all, avenging Raul and Lucia so their spirits could rest in peace in the afterlife of the Spirit World while Shuriki's spirit is confined to the dark side of the Spirit World for eternity and never threaten Avalor or anyone in the Ever Realm ever again.
Her parents' spirits come to help her one more time after she is trapped in the Spirit World with Ash Delgado in the series finale, "Coronation Day", after choosing to go after Esteban out of personal revenge instead of Ash when they attempt to free the Four Shades of Awesome to attack Avalor with, with the Grand Macaw offering to send one of them back to Avalor if they "win" an olaball match against each other. Raul and Lucia help Elena, along with Zuzo, but during the match, Elena is blinded by her anger from learning of Esteban's allegiance with Shuriki during her original takeover, which gives Ash an advantage since Elena was unfocused due to her rage. Noticing this, Raul and Lucia call a timeout and talk to Elena, explaining that her anger and wanting vengeance on her cousin won't bring them back from the dead and those emotions are clouding her judgement. Raul reveals that Shuriki only attacked Avalor as he interfered with her attacking their allies when he was still alive and in power as sovereign of Avalor, so she turned her attention to Avalor in retaliation for disrupting her plans, so with Avalor under her control, she could then attack its allies once more without intervention and rule over everyone in the Ever Realm. Esteban warned Raul about Shuriki seeking revenge, but Raul ignored him. As a result, Esteban sided with Shuriki, under the promise that his family would be spared her wrath, but still wanting payback for her failed assault on Avalor's allies due to Raul's interference, she murdered Raul and Lucia as she originally planned, going back on her word with Esteban. Hearing all that, Elena calms down, and understanding the truth to the Grand Macaw's words, she loses to Ash, leading to Ash being condemned to stay in the Spirit World forever while Elena is allowed to return to Avalor, spending one last goodbye with her parents before she returns home, knowing they will always be watching over her from the Spirit World from now on. After stopping the Four Shades of Awesome and forgiving Esteban, Elena officially succeeds Raul and Lucia as sovereign of Avalor as she is crowned Queen by Francisco.
